Beware – Positive Self Talk Can Hurt You !
Sometimes repeating positive statements can backfire. When a person doesn’t believe the statements, it can create even more frustration and self-blame. The following is a true story of how Sandi (fictitious name) was hurt by well meaning advice to use positive statements to improve her self-concept.
Before seeing Sandi for her first appointment her mother gave me some history about the issue she Sandi was facing. She told me how Sandi was good at so many things, and was a loving and caring person. It broke her heart to hear Sandi saying she wasn’t good at anything. Sandi had a few friends, but at times they would leave her out of things.
In trying to help her daughter improve her self-concept mom would read her excerpts from self-help books.
When Sandi would get down on herself her mom would remind her of all the wonderful things she did. She’d remind Sandi to say positive messages about herself many times a day.
Unfortunately this backfired. Continued in tomorrow’s post
